Glamping Pod; ‘What is it & are they worth it?’

Have you heard of a glamping pod? For some, it’s the only way they go camping! There are many benefits of glamping/camping pods but it’s not for everyone, so let’s explore what it is exactly, to help you decide if it’s a good option for your next camping/’glamping’ trip, or if purchasing one is a good option for you.

Introduction to Glamping Pods

Beat the rainy-day cancellations and do camping, next level! Glamping pods could open a whole new revenue stream for you and the family.

We look at what glamping pods are and if they are worth investing in. Whether it be a cosy nook in the yard for a private staycation or as an alternative accommodation option for you to host those who just can’t do tent life!

Glamping is fast becoming one of the most popular holiday accommodation options on the market. Glamping pods suit a variety of guests with various budgets and more importantly, the comfort and security without the hassle of camping setups and weather cancellations. For newcomers to the world of hosting, owning a glamping pod could open up a revenue stream with minimal to no interruption to your own living space. Glamping can also be a great eco-friendly alternative to the old backyard granny flat.

 What is a glamping pod?

By definition, the word ‘glamping’ has been coined as a colloquial term for glamorous camping! Add this to a detachable or self-contained unit and you have the glamping pod.

For some, the thought of setting up a 3-room tent in the rain with two children under 7 in the car, screaming out the window – are you finished yet?! – while you’re processing in your head how you are going to get the tent cover over that 2m frame, that’s 5m long, all on your own… (which you can with great difficulty, by the way) – is what nightmares are made of.

Particularly during recent times with significant amounts of rain, couples and families who look forward to the camping holiday periods are often left disappointed with cancellations due to the weather. And even once the rain has eased for the season the weather starts to cool and camping during winter is not everyone’s cup of tea. There is something deeply satisfying about getting close to nature and hiking through the great outdoors, during the rainy season or even the cooler months and then coming back to a nice cosy place to chill out with a hot chocolate.

Thankfully, the wonderful world of camping has grown in leaps and bounds with pod camping! Not only can you go camping without wrangling a single tent pole, but you can also do it in style and luxury in your own glamping pod. Glamping pods originally began trending in Europe, the UK, Canada and the US around 2005 to offer guests a unique outdoor accommodation experience with luxury.

Glamping pods can either be erected by the owner and come with instruction manuals however most companies will be willing and able to set up for you at an additional cost.

Glamping pods come in all shapes and sizes however the main concept remains the same, a compact cosy living space in amongst nature.

How much is a glamping pod to buy?

To purchase a glamping pod, pricing starts at a moderate $6000 for a basic one-room pod, add-ons such as kitchenettes, toilet or bathroom and decking can be added for an additional cost. Pods range from a base model as a simple flat-pack kit to something a bit more detailed and eco-lodge vibe.

If you are wanting next level glamping and depending on how much you are wanting to invest, a fully fitted out pod or glamtainer, including facilities such as a bathroom with toilet and shower, kitchen with gas or electric stove, a roomy sleeping and living area start from $117,000 onwards. Even the more moderately priced glamping pod that does not include all of the extras but provides an open, comfortable and secure living space such as this one from modnpods, can be made glamorous with luxurious bedding, complimentary beauty products and a tea and coffee station with boutique local or quality exotic products. Whatever your budget, there are no hard and fast rules on what a glamping pod could or should provide. However, it is worth noting that this will affect the amount you could reasonably charge for one’s stay.

What are glamping pods made of?

Glamping pods are made from a variety of materials from canvas to wood, plastic, steel and metal sheeting. Depending on your budget, design preferences and added extras the pods are designed to suit your needs. Assuming the glamping pod will be out in the open you would need to consider your geographical location when deciding which one suits your needs. For example, if you are located in Queensland the material of the pod would potentially need to withstand hail, strong winds and plenty of rain! Whereas somewhere much further south would benefit from additional insulation for minus temperatures and snow.

Are glamping pods a good investment?

Speaking of investments, all start-up ventures come with their own considerations and risks. Where are you planning to locate your glamping pod? Are you centrally located to popular attractions or will the glamping pod be placed on a large property with beautiful natural surroundings? These considerations will all form a part of the appeal and popularity of your glamping pod. Once your glamping pod is up and running some other considerations could include the availability of your glamping pod. Will it be available to hire Monday to Sunday or would you prefer just a weekend venture? How much time are you willing or able to spend on servicing the pod? This could include general cleaning, laundry, replenishing sundry items such as tea, coffee and other small extras you may wish to include, scheduling and booking stays and other administration tasks.

How much can you earn from glamping?

Depending on the availability, popularity and mod cons such as complimentary boutique beauty products, fluffy robes, towels and warm slippers or perhaps a continental breakfast basket upon arrival? Some even include a hot tub! Whatever you decide to add to your glamping pod, this venture could be quite lucrative or could provide you with additional funds to do the things you love! There are a variety of options available at present on websites such as airbnb with similar listings under tiny homes and domes. Glamping pod owners are currently charging between $500 to $2500 for a 5-night stay starting from basic to super luxe.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) about Glamping Pods

How many people can stay in a glamping pod?

Most glamping pods are simple in design with one room that may or may not include a queen bed, kitchenette and or bathroom. Depending on the size of the pod, they usually accommodate between 2-4 people.

 Do glamping pods need electricity?

Glamping pods can be operated like you would a caravan, by simply plugging into a mains power source or they can be created to be completely eco-friendly and self-sufficient on solar power and tank water. These options would also need to be considered in your overall costing. Nowadays, glamping without electricity generally takes the glam out of camping. Most people choose to glamp to avoid being without what they may consider an essential service. That being said – depending on your target audience, you could very well run the pod without electricity.

How long does a glamping pod last?

Depending on the manufacturer and their warranty and service guarantee policies and a variety of external factors including the geographical location of the pod, exposure to certain elements, frequency of maintenance and so on – glamping pods can be designed to withstand the elements for approximately 15 to 20 years. However, with any investment, research is key.

Conclusion – Glamping Pods

If you love hosting guests with a little bit of rugged luxury and style, then this could be what you are looking for. Becoming a host can be a very rewarding experience. Not only do you meet people from far and wide, but your little piece of heaven can become a part of their story. If you prefer to become a “silent” host and give your guests complete privacy, then this can easily be done with a well-organised system to ensure your guests have everything they need without having to contact you during their stay. However you decide to run your glamping pod, your guests will look forward to a unique and pleasant experience… unlike trying to erect an oversized tent on your own, in the rain..

I’m originally from the bush, but I currently live in the big smoke of Sydney, Australia. I am based out of here for work, where I fly Cargo operations all over the world. I am no stranger to the open road and have previously road tripped my way all around Australia in a station wagon and a tent as I progressed from job to job building flying experience for my Aviation career. This blog is all about detailing my journey as I seek to trade my city life for Van life. Things that really attract me to Van life are the Freedom, Minimalism and Financial Independence it brings.
